Over the course of a relatively short span of time, Young Turks has gone from containing a bunch of 18-year-old party promoters to being one of the most important independent record labels of our time. Ardent followers of the British music scene have been privy to the awesomeness of the Young Turks label for a long while as their steady stream of quality releases from The XX, Chairlift, Sampha, SBTRKT, John Talabot and Koreless, among others, have cemented their position as a vibrant, boundary-pushing music hub. And we have a feeling that this video of their New Year’s beach party in Tulum, Mexico, will only serve to strengthen the growing consensus that Young Turks are a musical force to be reckoned with.
The London-based Young Turks label manage that rare and exhilarating feat of connecting seemingly disparate impulses under one banner and making it look almost effortlessly mundane. Similarities between artists like Sampha and The XX, which were initially faint at best somehow become blatantly clear when you see them united under a mustachioed, fez-wearing skull.
Maybe this coherent diversity is the result of passionate, dedicated people with excellent taste and a knack for uncovering new talent coming together and conjuring up that elusive label magic? Check out the first video in this DAZEDVISIONARIES series, which documents the NYE action from Mexico and you might find out.
There’s even a bit of TMA-1 action when SBTRKT takes to the stage.
