Hip, Western musicians are currently getting high on the trippy, organic sounds of world music. Check out what happens when world music meets musical cousins. This one's for all you hippies out there.
There's something about world music that makes it super attractive for some and somewhat less attractive for others. I myself, identifying with the former, cannot get enough, and the fact there's considerably less world music in the mainstream blogosphere than there are other genres, makes it even more desirable and precious. Words won't do a good job when it comes to this topic, though, so here, after spotting some gems throughout the last couple of months, are the absolute top picks.
This is world music with a hint of … well, see for yourself.
TINARIWEN - TENERE TAQHIM TOSSAM (FOUR TET REMIX)
See above video
Tinariwen, Touareg musicians from Sahara desert remixed by Four Tet, are at the top of the list because every single second of this track is a joy. (The rest goes in no particular order.)
BLK JKS - ZOL!
These South African gents are sort of indie electro funk rockers with a hint of ethic African music. I remember them being quite hyped a few months back while being referred to as African "TV on the Radio". I'm not convinced this particular track sounds anything like it, but it sure is fantastic.
DAPHNI (aka CARIBOU) - MAPFUMO
So Daphni edited Thomas Mapfumo and the Black Unlimited's track called Shumba from the late 70s. (And knowing, for some reason, made me like Caribou's Swim even more. Not that it wasn't likable enough to begin with..)
BJÖRK vs. OMAR SOULEYMAN - TESLA
Out of all the cool guys mentioned in this post, these two had been my biggest expectation before "it happened". Well, actually, it was the only expectation, because I had found out about this project long before it was finished. Whereas I had no idea what the rest of the guys had been up to until the actual songs were released. .Björk and Omar did a good job building the suspense.
EYE vs. KONONO N°1 - WA WA WA (REWORK)
Yamataka Eye from Japanese Boredoms teamed up with African Konono N°1 for Tradi-Mods vs. Rockers compilation. I will say no more.
ANIMAL COLLECTIVE vs. KOCANI ORKESTAR - OI BORI SUJIE
Imagine a Balkan brass band kind of music that Turkish army bands used to play, you know, and then add some Animal Collectiveness to it. It took me a few listens to understand how great this track is, but I'm really glad it happened. Perfect combo these two.
BONUS TRACK: GROUP DOUEH - WAZAN DOUEH
From their latest record released on Sublime Frequencies, this track has the kind of repetition in sound that makes you wanna jump out of your skin because of the endorphin rush. A pure beauty.
