Want to see the documentary that depicts the rise, tribulations and subsequent rise of the world’s best operating independent hip hop label? It’s all about the Stones Throw Kickstarter project.
These days Kickstarter projects are a dime a dozen. Ever since the innovative online platform opened its doors to hopeful entrepreneurs, burning idealists and eager beavers wanting to cash in, the range of ideas have been wide and the disappointment has unfortunately also been frequent.
The ‘AI Wei Wei: Never Sorry’ documentary and the 100 % Silk film (that we bigged up here) have been some of the outstandingly awesome exceptions, but by and large Kickstarter hasn’t quite lived up to our initial expectations.
However, things are looking up. Stones Throw, the pioneering LA-based label and arguably the world’s most credible hub for experimental, independent hip hop, are making a feature-length documentary aptly named ‘Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton' that showcases their tantalizing story and their diverse array of artists. Independent hip hop luminaries like the late, great J-Dilla, Madlib, Madvillain, Aloe Blacc, Guilty Simpson, Dam Funk and newest spectacular signing, Chrome Canyon are all in there and it looks set to be quite the treat, to be perfectly honest.
Drawing on live concert footage, never-before-seen archival material, inner-circle home video and photographs and in-depth interviews with the folks who put Stones Throw on the map, the documentary will delve deeper into the label's enigmatic artists, history, culture and global following.
So yeah, there’s only one thing for it: send label founder Peanut Butter Wolf your money. And you best hurry up because the Kickstarter ends on Friday.
