Remember ‘Boogie Nights’, ‘Magnolia’ and ‘Punch Drunk Love’? Well, the guy who directed those modern classics is back with a new movie starring Philip Seymor Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix. Check out the teaser trailer after the jump.

It’s been a while since Paul Thomas Andersen’s last film. Actually, it was way back in 2007 that the American director cast Daniel Day Lewis in the role of a gold miner-turned-oilman on a ruthless quest for wealth during Southern California's oil boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and it wouldn’t be lying through one’s filthy, rotten teeth to say that the somewhat lengthy hiatus from cinema has built up a sizable amount of anticipation for the indie auteur’s next move.

Paul Thomas Anderson, if you’ve never heard of him, is the man who convinced the scientology-devoted A-lister, Tom Cruise, that wearing a leather west and donning a ponytail while shouting ’respect the cock!’ in Magnolia would be a good idea. He’s the man who unleashed Adam Sandler’s inner actor dragon on the world in ‘Punch Drunk Love’ and he made that knee-slappingly hilarious yet deeply tragic movie called Boogie Nights, which was what got everyone hooked in the first place. Yes, Paul Thomas Andersen has churned out his fair share of singularly brilliant films.

‘The Master ‘ stars Paul Thomas Anderson regular Philip Seymour Hoffman as a charismatic World War II veteran who, haunted by his experiences, decides to start his own religion called ”The Cause”. And, judging exclusively by the looks of this teaser, it looks set to be another stone cold winner. Needless to say, it’s hard to say anything even remotely decent about a 1.40 minute trailer, but it looks like Joaquin Phoenix has been cast a troubled/gentle/funny psychopath and that ‘s good enough for us at the present moment in time.
