'Fantastic Man' is a documentary investigating Nigerian musician William Onyeabor, a man shrouded in mystery and myth. Directed by Jake Sumner, the film tells the story of a label's attempt to track William down, speaking to fans such as Damon Albarn, Caribou and Femi Kuti and travelling to Nigeria to meet those who've worked with him in a bid to uncover the truth about his story.
Bearing certain resemblances to‘Searching for Sugarman’, the inspired documentary that told the story of a South African music journalist who tracked down Detroit native singer/songwriter Rodriguez to tell the humble, unwitting construction worker him that he was in fact a big star in Africa’s Southernmost republic, 'Fantastic Man' is a documentary about a hugely influential Nigerian electronic musician who no one can find.
Featuring interviews with prominent afro-beat fans and preeminent musicians who fawn and gush over the singular producer, this is pretty much obligatory watching for fans of quality music. And, as if that wasn’t enough, it even features Dan Snaith AKA Caribou rocking TMA-1s at New York’s MoMA PS1 (around 10:25).
In other words, taking 30 minutes out of your day to watch ‘Fantastic Man’ comes highly recommended from AIAIAI HQ.
