Going out in Berlin is usually associated with clubbing and people often forget to check out all the bars the city has to offer. Getting wasted can be a treat, if you know where to go.
Tier is one of my favourite bars the moment. The drinks are excellent, the bar dark and cosy and yet still free from ‘Watergate mate’ types.
During the weekends it tend to get crowded but the atmosphere is always friendly and forgiving.
I recently stumbled upon the kiosk ‘Späti International’ and immediately fell in love. Besides having a broad assortment of beer, wine and liquor, the backroom is transformed into a secret bar on the weekends. Dogan, the owner, is a music lover and you will often hear loud African and Turkish funk blasting out of the speakers.
Buy your drinks in the shop take them to the back and mingle with the locals.
Celo Privat Bar
Privat bar is a hidden gem. Dark and full of smoke, the way your grandmother’s living room used to be. Here you can listen to Tom Waits and dusty rock n’ roll but never techno. Classy!

Another fine place to start the evening is Locke Muller. This lovely little establishment is located on Spreewald Platz next to Görlitzer Park.
They make a mean ‘Horses Neck’ – probably the best I’ve had in Berlin and Thursday – Saturday Dj’s spin vinyl at very low volume, very nice!
Spreewald Platz 14
Kirk is conveniently located on the doorstep of Schlesiches Tor. The bar is rather big, includes an outside sitting area perfect for the summer and is within walking distance of several clubs (Watergate, Chalet, Club der Visionaere).
