We just stumbled upon these great photos of the incredible concept of Dazzle Camouflage, which was actually the inspiration for our graphic nerd Mix, when he designed the cover for our Pipe lookbook. The background story is, that during World War I, British artist and naval officer Norman Wilkinson was facing problems because of very effective German U-boats and was thinking of ways to dodge the torpedoes. By a stroke of genius he thought “It’s not where you are it’s where you’re going” and therefore came up with the idea of Dazzle Camouflage (also known as Razzle Dazzle in the United States). The idea was to use bright, loud colours and contrasting diagonal stripes to make it incredibly difficult to gauge a ship’s size and direction. It was cheap, effective, (and looks so cool!) and widely-adopted during the War. Check out the incredible photographs below...
