Over the course of a relatively short span of time, Young Turks has gone from containing a bunch of 18-year-old party promoters to being one of the most important independent record labels of our time. Ardent followers of the British music scene have been privy to the awesomeness of the Young Turks label for a long while as their steady stream of quality releases from The XX, Chairlift, Sampha, SBTRKT, John Talabot and Koreless, among others, have cemented their position as a vibrant, boundary-pushing music hub. And we have a feeling that this video of their New Year’s beach party in Tulum, Mexico, will only serve to strengthen the growing consensus that Young Turks are a musical force to be reckoned with.
Yes, that’s right, THE Chris Cunningham, warped genius of ‘Rubber Johnny’ and Aphew Twin’s ‘’Come to Daddy’ fame. Seems like an odd match on the face of it, but our general feeling is that the upcoming documentary might just be sensationally good as we’ve just learned that Chris Cunningham is in fact husbanding Warpaint’s bassist Jenny Lee Lindbergh. And we’re assuming that this would give the longhaired director of cutting edge filth access to areas that other directors who are, shall we say, less intimate with the band might not have access to. It's actually been waaaay to long since we featured our old friend and TMA-1 collaborator Tomas Barfod on the blog - which is why a fresh Souncloud update from the Great Dane couldn't have come at a better time. In this mix that he created for Danish national radio show Unga Bunga in early 2013, he once again demonstrates his unparalleled ability for balancing mood and texture with rythm and beat. It's one of those melancholy-yet-uplifting selections that just might have you dancing with tears in your eyes, as the song goes. Failing that, listening to it while enjoying a good cup of coffee and looking at the falling snow through your window, should get you good and ready for 2014.
The Deep are an intriguing, new Los Angeles-based electronic sci-fi duo shrouded in enticing conceptual mystery. Their new single Singular Silence has created quite a bit of stir in the blogosphere, partially because it’s backed up by a hefty arsenal of remarkable remixes - such as this wonderfully unpredictable, Björk-resembling Pieces of Juno mix that we’re particularly taken with here at AIAIAI HQ.
Helsinki-based ceramics artist/designer Man Yau has crafted a series of remarkably elegant, conceptual sculptures that look and feel like a million dollars. They’re the sort of trophy-like objects that you might secretly dream of being able to afford - when you move into that swanky new Lower Eastside apartment where Apartamento and Monocle magazines are casually interspersed on the charmingly weathered upholstery of your vintage Eames sofas. However, these sculptures come with an interesting catch; they’re actually fully functional bongs ready to be filled with potent Mary Jane and get you high as a kite.

Just when you thought the Stones Throw label could not possibly get any doper, they unveil one of the most monumental mega jams in recent memory. The hook up between Snoop and Dâm-Funk is one of those collaborations that makes you go:’ why hasn’t this happened before? And the answer to that question is quite obviously that the stars had to be aligned just right, so that the celestial shine from Planet Funk could focus a twofold beam of iridescent cosmic energy at Snoop’s sizable blunt and Dam-funk’s opulent ‘do - the force of which has pulled these seasoned Caesars of the groove together in the one of most delicious, synthed-out love-ins of all time. As in the entire planet. Assuming the project succeeds, this effectively means that the remaining 5-6 billion people who are not wired in like the rest of us will get access to the internet by way of Google’s high-altitude balloons, which will eventually form a planet-covering network. Yes, the ambition and scope of Google’s latest project is dizzying to say the least.
