21 Balançoires (21 Swings)

A highly likeable piece of interactive art that elegantly expresses the strength and beauty in the collective human effort.

The swings move slowly to the sound of music. No, actually the music plays slowly to the movement of the swings. Every spring this interactive installation blooms and takes over a high-traffic area in Montréal’s Quartier des spectacles and sets a collective ritual.

Devised and performed by Montreal designers Mouna Andraos and Melissa Mongiat, the swings offer walkers a bright and unique poetic musical experience. ESKI designed and built the interactive system of the 21 swings.

A set of sensors determines the magnitude, timing and position of the swings, to compose musical notes according to each swing. The swing seats are LED-"light boxes" that illuminates the underside of the swings when they are in motion.

It makes strangers interact in creative ways, brings people closer and makes you wanna hang out. It's quite simply as magically adventurous as a fairy tale.
